Tullana
Lisnarick, Fermanagh, Northern Ireland
2006 - 2010
Tullana is a distinctive village-centre development situated in the historic settlement of Lisnarick, County Fermanagh, close to the shores of Lower Lough Erne and Castle Archdale. The project was conceived as a contemporary addition to the village while retaining the scale, character and architectural language associated with the surrounding rural settlement.
The design is organised as a collection of interconnected building forms rather than a single dominant volume. This approach helps the development sit comfortably within the established streetscape, reflecting the varied rooflines and proportions traditionally found within rural villages across Fermanagh. A series of pitched roofs, rendered elevations and carefully positioned openings create a familiar architectural rhythm, while subtle contemporary detailing gives the scheme its own identity.
At the prominent corner facing the village green, the building establishes a strong focal point within Lisnarick. The increased height and articulated façade mark this important position without overwhelming the neighbouring properties. Ground-floor glazing creates a more active relationship with the street, providing visibility and a sense of openness, while the upper floors are expressed more traditionally through smaller, carefully proportioned window openings.
Material selection was deliberately restrained. Light-coloured rendered walls are paired with grey pitched roofs and warm-toned timber detailing, allowing the development to complement the established palette of the village. Covered external areas, projecting roof elements and sheltered connections between the different parts of the building introduce additional depth and provide a transition between internal and external spaces.
Landscape and the existing mature trees surrounding the village green also play an important role in the setting of Tullana. Rather than competing with these elements, the architecture forms a backdrop to them, maintaining the green as a central feature of the village. Today, part of the development accommodates Tullana on the Green, a restaurant and café at the heart of Lisnarick, reinforcing the project’s relationship with village life and the surrounding community.
