Following the granting of planning permission by another architectural practice, Keys + Monaghan were appointed to develop and deliver Sligo Surf Centre through the detailed design and construction stages. The project required the planning proposal to be translated into a robust, coordinated and buildable scheme capable of responding to the demanding conditions of its exposed coastal setting. The technical development of the building focused on material durability, weather resistance and long-term performance, while retaining the architectural intent established at planning stage. Particular attention was given to the detailing of the external envelope, junctions and openings, ensuring that the building could withstand the effects of wind, rain and salt-laden air associated with its location on the Atlantic coast. Internally, the accommodation was developed to provide practical and flexible facilities for the centre’s users, with clear circulation and a strong relationship between the internal spaces and the surrounding landscape. Large areas of glazing create visual connections towards the coast, while the restrained external palette of render, metal cladding and glazing reflects the robust character required of a building in this environment. The surrounding public realm was considered as an extension of the building, providing generous external spaces for arrival, gathering and activity. The completed project demonstrates the importance of careful technical resolution and architectural delivery, transforming an approved concept into a durable and welcoming coastal facility suited to its distinctive setting.
