Canal Workers Cottage
We are pleased to share one of our latest project, Canal Works Cottage, a sensitive conservation and extension scheme centred on the careful renewal of an existing historic stone building.
The proposal seeks to retain the character and material qualities of the original cottage while introducing a series of contemporary additions that provide the accommodation required for its new use. The existing stonework remains at the heart of the composition, with new elements expressed in a restrained palette of metal cladding, render and glazing to create a clear distinction between old and new.
The new interventions are deliberately simple in form, taking cues from the scale and pitched roof profiles of the original buildings while adopting a more contemporary architectural language. This allows the historic structure to remain legible, while the extensions establish their own identity without competing with the existing fabric.
Internally, the scheme has been developed around improved circulation, natural light and stronger connections between the different parts of the building. Generous areas of glazing bring daylight deep into the plan and create a closer relationship with the surrounding landscape. The project continues our interest in the careful adaptation and reuse of existing buildings, preserving their character while allowing them to evolve to meet contemporary needs.
