Murphy’s on Main St.

The conservation and extension of Murphy’s on Main St. involved the careful renewal of an existing traditional building in the centre of Ederney, adapting it to accommodate a new community hub and tearooms while retaining the character and familiarity of the original property. The existing building was sensitively repaired, with its simple proportions, traditional window openings and rendered façade retained as important elements of its identity. New work was approached with restraint, ensuring that the historic building remained clearly legible while allowing it to meet the practical requirements of its new use. The extension provides additional accommodation in a manner that complements rather than competes with the original structure. Particular attention was given to the relationship between old and new, creating clear connections between spaces while improving circulation, accessibility and the overall functionality of the building. The completed project demonstrates how conservation and adaptive reuse can give an existing building a renewed role within its community. By retaining the character of the original property and carefully introducing new accommodation, Murphy’s on Main St. has been transformed into a welcoming and active community space while continuing to contribute to the established streetscape of Ederney.
