Lisnaskea Library was conceived as a contemporary new-build civic building within the sensitive context of the town’s conservation area. The project required a careful balance between establishing a clear architectural identity for the library and responding appropriately to the scale, rhythm and character of the surrounding historic streetscape. The building is positioned directly within the existing street frontage, reinforcing the established urban edge and maintaining the continuity of Main Street. Its massing, proportions and roof form respond to the neighbouring buildings, while a restrained palette of stone, glazing and dark metalwork gives the library a distinctly contemporary expression. At street level, generous areas of glazing create a welcoming and visible entrance, establishing a stronger relationship between the library and the public realm. Internally, the building was organised to provide flexible, accessible spaces with good levels of natural light and clear circulation, supporting both traditional library use and a wider range of community activities. The completed project demonstrates how contemporary architecture can sit confidently within a conservation setting, respecting the scale and grain of the historic town while introducing a clearly modern civic building. Rather than replicating the surrounding architecture, the design responds to its context through proportion, materiality and careful integration into the existing streetscape.
