The conservation and adaptation of Fanad Head Lighthouse centred on the careful repair and renewal of this significant coastal landmark, balancing the protection of its historic character with the requirements of a new use. The project involved the sensitive restoration of the existing lighthouse buildings alongside the conversion of former accommodation into high-quality guest stays.

The architectural approach was one of restraint, with new interventions designed to sit quietly within the existing fabric. Original proportions, materials and architectural details were retained wherever possible, while necessary upgrades to services, comfort and accessibility were carefully integrated. Particular attention was given to maintaining the simple, robust character of the buildings and their relationship with the exposed Atlantic landscape. Rather than treating the lighthouse as a collection of individual buildings, the project considered the wider complex and its setting as a whole. The restored white-rendered forms, enclosed courtyards and immediate coastal landscape remain central to the experience of the place, allowing visitors to engage closely with both the architectural heritage of the lighthouse and its dramatic location. The completed project gives the historic buildings a sustainable new purpose while preserving the qualities that make Fanad Head distinctive, ensuring that its character, history and sense of place can continue to be experienced by future generations.
