The design for Edenmore National School responds to a particularly challenging site, where the presence of an existing floodplain became a fundamental driver of the architectural strategy. Rather than treating the site constraints as secondary, the proposal was developed around them, carefully considering building levels, access, drainage and the relationship between the school and its surrounding landscape. The building is arranged to create a clear and legible school environment while minimising its impact on the more sensitive areas of the site. Its form responds to the existing ground conditions, with accommodation positioned and elevated where necessary to provide a resilient long-term solution. This approach allows the architecture to work with the natural characteristics of the site rather than against them. A restrained palette of contemporary materials gives the school a strong but calm identity. Dark metal cladding defines the upper volumes, while lighter elements at ground level help break down the scale of the building and create sheltered entrances and external spaces. Generous areas of glazing bring daylight into the teaching and circulation areas and establish strong visual connections with the surrounding landscape. The result is a contemporary educational building shaped directly by the environmental challenges of its site, creating a safe, resilient and welcoming place for learning.
