Clones Canal Stores
Clones, Monaghan, Ireland
2018 - 2024
The conservation and extension of Clones Canal Stores focused on the careful renewal of the existing historic building while introducing new accommodation to support its continued use. The project sought to retain the robust character and material qualities of the original structure, allowing its stone walls, openings and simple industrial form to remain central to the architectural identity of the building. The existing fabric was repaired and conserved wherever possible, with new interventions introduced in a clear and contemporary manner. Rather than attempting to replicate the historic architecture, the extension is expressed as a distinct addition, using a restrained palette of modern materials to sit comfortably alongside the original stonework. A narrow glazed connection helps define the transition between old and new, allowing the historic elevation to remain legible while bringing natural light into the junction between the two elements. The simple form and metal cladding of the extension respond to the utilitarian character of the original canal buildings without competing with them. The completed project creates a careful dialogue between conservation and contemporary architecture, giving the historic structure a renewed purpose while preserving its character and connection to the wider heritage of Clones. The result is an architecture that is deliberately understated, where new work supports and complements the existing building rather than overwhelming it.
