The extension to Carrigallen National School was developed to provide additional teaching accommodation while strengthening the existing school as a coherent and welcoming learning environment. The project expands the capacity of the school through a carefully considered addition that responds to the scale, form and character of the existing buildings. A key element of the project is the provision of new Special Educational Needs classrooms and associated accommodation, designed to create calm, supportive and accessible spaces for pupils with a range of learning requirements. Particular attention was given to natural light, clear circulation, ease of access and the relationship between internal teaching spaces and external areas. Architecturally, the extension adopts a restrained contemporary language that complements the existing school without simply replicating it. A series of pitched roof forms helps to break down the scale of the development, while a simple palette of robust materials gives the building a clear identity and allows the new and existing elements to read as part of one overall composition. The arrangement of the extension also improves movement through the school, creating stronger connections between existing and new accommodation and establishing a clearer arrival and entrance sequence. The result is a practical and inclusive addition that provides the school with much-needed space while creating a flexible environment capable of supporting its pupils and staff into the future.
